If you think your guitar strap is just a handy way to make sure your instrument is supported, you’re only half right. Just like the clothes we wear, the haircuts we choose and the guitars we play, our straps tell our audience something about us and the way we see ourselves!
The plain strap
A plain and simple strap says you’re planning on being taken seriously, and that you’re mainly concerned with how you sound, not how you look.
The patterned strap
An abstract pattern is the favourite of guitar players who want to look a little different and don’t want to be seen as following the crowd.
The promotional strap
If the strap features a charity or good cause, you’ve got an ethical musician on your hands, if it promotes a retail company or similar, you may have someone who simply likes a free strap when they’re given one.
The cartoon strap
Comedy cartoon straps are fun for messing around, but unless you’re a kid, teenager or a hipster who can claim you’re being ironic, they are unlikely to do you any favours at a gig.
The studded strap
Mostly work by rock or metal guitarists, leather straps with studs say you want people to take notice – and you’re ready to rock out.
Find the perfect strap for you, as well as a wide range of guitar accessories, at Advanced Music. Call 08 6555 3118 to find out more about their selection of instruments and excellent music lessons in Perth today.

Restringing a guitar is a basic skill every guitarist should know. Whether you are a beginner having your first music lessons, or a skilled guitarist, a new set of strings will help keep your guitar in tune, and give you a superior sound.
Two essential tools you will need to restring your guitar properly are wire cutters and a string winder, which you should be able to find at any good music instrument stores. It’s also a good idea to have guitar lubricant on hand, to grease the string grooves.
This video, featuring Bill Baker, an expert guitar technician, takes you through the steps of stringing both electric and acoustic guitars. Along with his demonstration, he also provides a few tips and tricks he has picked up from his years as a technician.
After you’ve restrung your guitar, you will then need to tune it. New guitar players should invest in an electronic guitar tuner, or guitar tuning software that will ensure tuning precision. You can pick up a guitar tuner from most music instrument stores or download accurate apps for your smartphone.
Bill recommends anyone who regularly uses his or her guitar, should be restringing it at least every two weeks.

Located just a few minutes from Perth’s CBD and Northbridge is Perth’s music mecca, the much-loved Rosemount Hotel. Regularly hosting local, national and international acts, the landmark venue has often been the breakthrough stage for original Australian bands.
Affectionately known by locals and fans as ‘the Rosie’, the Rosemount Hotel is one of Perth’s leading venues for live music, with live gigs on Wednesday through to the weekend.
The list of artists to have graced and rumbled the stage at the Rosie is impressively exhausting and includes big names such as Gyroscope, Sarah Blasko, Missy Higgins, The Panics, Jose Gonzalez, Karnivool, Spoon and The Temper Trap to name but a few.
The Rosie is a huge venue, spread out into different sections, each with distinctly different vibes. The grassed beer garden is prime position to enjoy the Perth sunshine, beer in hand, and is famous for its Sunday Sessions with DJs providing the perfect chilled soundtrack.
The inside corner bar provides a more intimate place to enjoy a drink and bite to eat, while all areas around the central bar boast excellent vantage points to view the magic onstage and the powerful PA system does the bands complete justice.
The Rosie also has an exclusive bar and lounge, which can be booked for private functions ranging from business meetings to formal dinners.
Thanks to its contribution to Perth’s live music scene, the Rosemount has recently picked up the prestigious WAMi award for the ‘Most Popular Music Venue 2011.’

If you really want to become a great musician, or simply want to enjoy playing a musical instrument, music lessons is a great step in that direction. While it’s true that some musicians are naturally talented and have a seemingly genetic flair with their instrument, all musicians can benefit from music lessons.
As well as learning the technical skills to play an instrument properly, music lessons will teach you music theory, how to play certain songs, how to read music, new skills needed for new instrument technology and composition or song writing. These are all important teachings, which will prove particularly valuable if wanting to take your musical passion to a professional level.
To get the most out of your music lessons, you need to commit to regular practice and be patient. Don’t expect to become the next Mozart or Slash overnight, otherwise you are setting yourself up for disappointment. It’s normal to get frustrated when first learning an instrument, but if you stick with it, you will learn a skill that you can enjoy for the rest of your life.
Becoming a musician requires both passion and skill. Passion is something only you can do for yourself, but skills must be learnt and this is where music lessons come in. Through the guidance of a skilled music teacher, you can become the best musician you can be.
Advanced Music in Perth is more than just a branch of music instrument stores. From four locations, Bunbury, Ellenbrook, Clarkson and Malaga, Advanced Music run some of the best music schools in Perth. They offer music lessons for everyone from two-year-olds to advanced musicians. Call 08 6555 3118 to enquire about their music lessons and take the first step to becoming a musician.
